2009-2010 Fact Sheet

The University of Georgia Campus Transit System provides safe, reliable transportation throughout the University campus. Regular route services are available on a no-fare basis to all. The University of Georgia Campus Transit System carries the largest volume of passengers of any university transit system in the United States. Annual ridership is second in the state of Georgia to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA).

Services Provided

  • Fixed Route Service: Campus Transit operates 39 buses on nine weekday routes and six buses on two night-time routes over an average of 3,500 route miles and 1,600 daily bus trips. Overnight and weekend services are also provided to many points on campus, limited off-campus locations and to downtown Athens. Campus Transit will operate service 300 days this fiscal year.
  • Hours of Operation: 24-hours a day weekdays from 6:00 a.m. Monday through 1:00 a.m. Saturday, Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. during the Fall and Spring semesters. A reduced level of service is provided during the summer and at other times when the University is not in session.
  • Subscription Service: Campus Transit operates ramp-equipped vans to provide curb-to-curb transportation service for disabled students, staff, faculty and guests from 7:00 a.m. through 2:00 a.m. weekdays. Services are provided by subscription and on-demand for unscheduled trips.
  • Special and Other Services: Campus Transit provides custom services to the University community for academic purposes and large events as well as providing professional drivers to departments requiring such service on a temporary basis. Campus Transit also provides interlibrary mail service between member units of the Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education (ARCHE).

Fleet

  • Forty-seven buses, four mini-buses and six ramp-equipped vans comprise the mass transportation fleet. The average age of the fleet is six years of age.
  • In addition, six staff and service vehicles provide supervisory and roadside repair capabilities.

Personnel

  • Administrative: Four full-time staff
  • Operations: Supervisory and operations staff of 30- full-time and over 110 part-time staff
  • Training: Three full-time and eight part-time staff
  • Maintenance: Ten full-time staff

Funding

  • Capital and operating expenses covered 93% through student transportation fees. Special service revenue provides the remaining 7% of the gross revenue toward expenses
  • A portion of the transportation fee allows students prepaid access to the local government-operated transport system (The Bus) through an agreement between the University of Georgia and the Athens-Clarke County government. In addition, staff and faculty members are provided fare-free access to Athens Transit the the University's Parking Services Department Alternative Transportation Program.
