Senior
Vice President for Finance and Administration
Tim Burgess, a veteran public servant with nearly three
decades of experience in Georgia government – including
four years as the state’s top budgeting and finance
officer – serves as the University of Georgia’s
senior vice president for finance and administration.
Burgess
began his career in 1979 with the Office of Planning
and Budget, rising through several positions
to deputy
director in 1992, and was appointed by Governor Zell
Miller in 1995 as director, a post he held until joining
the University
of Georgia for the first time in 1999. He served as associate
vice president for finance and administration at the
University from April 1999 to July 2000. After leaving
UGA, Burgess
served as the chief financial officer for the Georgia
Technology Authority and was appointed by Governor Roy
Barnes in 2001
as the first commissioner of the Georgia Department of
Motor Vehicle Safety. He served upon appointment by Governor
Sonny Perdue in 2003 as the commissioner of the Georgia
Department of Community Health (DCH). DCH manages the
state’s
Medicaid and State Employee Health Benefit program with
a $10.2 billion budget. Burgess rejoined UGA as associate
vice president and budget director in December 2005,
and he was selected by President Michael F. Adams as
senior
vice president for finance and administration effective
July 1, 2006. In this capacity, Burgess also serves as
treasurer for the UGA Athletic Association, treasurer
for the UGA Research Foundation, finance director for
the Arch
Foundation, and chair of the UGA Real Estate Foundation.
Burgess
is a 1977 graduate of the University of Georgia, where
he earned a bachelor’s degree in political
science. He also holds a master’s degree in public
administration from Georgia State University. A 1997 graduate
of the Leadership Georgia program and a participant in
the Global Leaders of the South Leadership Forum, Burgess
also completed the Atlanta Regional Commission Regional
Leadership Institute.
Burgess
is active in the local community, serving on the board
of directors for St. Mary's Hospital, as a board member
of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, as a board member
of the Northeast Georgia United Way, and on the board
of directors and as a member of the Athens Rotary Club. Burgess and his wife Carla have one child, Nicholas.
