Auto Insurance and Liability

The Auto Physical Damage coverage provides collision and comprehensive coverage for vehicles owned by UGA and leased vehicles if the lease is in excess of 30 days and there is intent to purchase the leased vehicle.  A leased vehicle must be leased in the name of the University of Georgia.  Premiums for auto physical damage coverage are billed at 1% of the market value with a $25.00 minimum premium per vehicle. As UGA is a participant in the DOAS administered Comprehensive Loss Control Program (CLCP) the standard $500 deductible will be waived with the following two exceptions: one - if a loss occurs, caused by you, involving a rear end collision or collision with a fixed object, including a parked car; and two - if a vehicle with auto physical damage coverage is involved in an accident and a decal is not visible on the damaged vehicle. In these two cases, a $500 deductible will apply. Additional information on vehicle decals and their placement, can be found by clicking on Driver's Alert - Report My Driving Program.

The Automobile Liability coverage protects the employees of the State, the University of Georgia, and the University System of Georgia Board of Regents against personal liability for damages arising out of the operation of state owned, personally owned, leased or short term rental vehicles, while acting within the course and scope of their official duties of employment.  The self insured auto liability program is included under the State Tort Claims Policy and General Liability.

It is recommended that only University employees be allowed to drive or ride in University vehicles. State vehicles should only be used for State business.  Vehicles used during an employee’s lunch hour are not considered official business unless they are in the course and scope of their duties.

A copy of the current Georgia Liability Insurance Identification Card should be placed in all state vehicles as well as personal vehicles when used for carrying out the functions of the University of Georgia.
Click here to view the vehicle insurance card instructions. Instructions for reporting accidents are included on the Georgia Liability identification Card.

All accidents must be reported to DOAS within 48 hours from the date the accident occurred. Any accident involving a state employee and a third party (vehicle, pedestrian, mailbox, etc.) should be called into the Network at 1-877-656-7475.  After contacting the network, contact Judy Baxter at 706-425-3083 with the claim center report number and police case number.

Any accident involving damage only to a state vehicle (falling tree, hit a deer, fire, theft, etc) can be reported directly to Judy Baxter at 706-425-3083 or jbaxter@uga.edu .

Volunteers (whether or not receiving compensation) have liability coverage under the General Liability, State Tort Claims Act, and Auto Liability policy while participating in a structured volunteer program organized, controlled, and directed by the University for the purpose of carrying out the functions of the University of Georgia.

The University does not carry collision or comprehensive insurance as a standard coverage. However, this coverage can be procured when desired or when required under a lease agreement. Please call the Administrative Services Division at 706-425-3083 whenever physical damage insurance is needed.
