Building and Contents Insurance

The State Owned Building and Content coverage provides for direct physical loss or damage to state owned property. Covered causes of loss include fire, lightning, explosion, windstorm, hail, smoke, vandalism, sprinkler leakage, flood, and water damage. Buildings that are not state-owned and under a lease agreement cannot be insured, but the contents housed in the leased building can be insured. UGA is billed a monthly premium by DOAS. The cost to insure property and contents under this policy is 9 cents per $100 replacement value. Reimbursement for a loss is based on the cost to repair or replace the building and/or contents with property of like kind and quality. All covered causes of loss are subject to a $1000 deductible per occurrence. Laptop computers are subject to a $1000 deductible per unit where the cause of loss is burglary. A burglary claim must be supported by forcible entry. Loss to Covered Property caused by or resulting from aircraft, watercraft or vehicles which you own or are operated in the course of your operations is subject to a $25,000 deductible.

All property losses or damage to UGA owned property or contents must be reported to the University of Georgia Police immediately. If your department is not located on the main UGA campus, please contact your local police department. Report all claims to the Risk Management Office within 48 hours of the incident via email.

Notice & Proof of Loss:  We are required to provide a written notice of loss within 60 days after the loss is discovered and a written proof of loss with full details of the loss within 120 days after the loss was discovered.  If full details of the loss are not known within 120 days, we may request an extension of time in which to file a proof of loss.  Such request must be made in writing to DOAS by our office and must be agreed to by DOAS.  Failure to comply with these policy conditions are grounds for denial.
